Meeting Notes - September 08by Mary Schwartz
Beth Guertin was pretty inspirational. Her presentation
was called Garbage Warps AKA cleaning out your yarn closet.
This was a very useful workshop and also one that sparked a
lot of creative thinking about leftovers and what to do with
yarn you previously didn’t know what to do with. We came
away with a notebook full of ideas, and direction for how to
carry them out.
PROGRAMS: In October we have Sarah Fortin’s 3 day workshop –
Weaving in 3 Dimensions. Anyone who’s seen Sarah’s fabulous
work at NEWS and wanted to know how it’s done, or wants to
escape into the 3rd dimension —this is the workshop for you.
In November we will have Ruby Leslie presenting Lost in
Translation or Why Color Theories Do Not Guarantee Good
Cloth. All of us get seduced in the yarn store. Then what?
Ruby designs for Handwoven magazine’s “Color Forecast”
series.
There are still openings in both of these workshops. Details
of the workshops and materials needed are on the website,
www.vermontweaversguild.org/calendar/workshops.html
Sarah’s workshop requires a raddle and a 15 dent reed.
However, don’t go out and buy a new reed if you don’t have
one. A 10 or 12 dent reed will work too.
There was a discussion to have evaluation forms for
workshops and presentations.
The feedback would be helpful both to the presenters and to
the program committee.
LIBRARY: The Guild now has a subscription to Weavers Craft.
We have also added Laila Lundell’s The Big Book of Weaving
to the library.
NEWSLETTER: there was a discussion about the newsletter,
what form it should take, and whether to continue it as a
print edition now that we have a website.
GUILD SHOW - The show will be at the Chandler Gallery
starting the 3rd Saturday in May. The theme will be “Windows
on Weaving: Views and Visions of the Vermont Weavers Guild.”
Our show entries don’t necessarily have to fit the theme so
the show coordinators think it would be nice if everyone
endeavored to make one thing this year that makes a
connection to windows.
There was further discussion about the bylaws. The guild
voted to amend them to reflect current practice. The
statement that no officer can serve more than 2 consecutive
terms will be eliminated and the bylaws will read that
president and vice-president are elected in odd numbered
years while secretary and treasurer are elected in even
years.
(This has been updated on the web site in the “members only”
section)
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION and BUSINESS:
Betty Atwood is willing to do simple alternative workshops
for those not signed up for the regular afternoon workshop.
The first one in October will be twining a small bag.
She will provide the frames for this once she knows how many
are interested. Contact Betty if you would like a frame and
to find out what you need to bring for yarn.
Inkle loom weaving was an idea for November. If anyone has
other ideas or is willing to do an informal workshop let BJ
Allen know.
Tami Pitman is helping to start a weaving program at an
orphanage in Guatemala for girls who were abused or sold
into slavery. Donations of money and equipment would be
deeply appreciated. She currently has 5 rigid heddle looms
and a floor loom. Deb Chandler of Mayan Hands is lending
warp / weft supply chain support. They hope to be able to
sell the products through mission teams. Tami will be going
to Guatemala November 6 – 15. If you are interested in
donating money/equipment or are interested in going to
Guatemala with this group please contact Tami.
Tax deductible donations can be made to
Lyndonville United Methodist Church
