Meeting Notes - October 08by Mary Schwartz
In October we had a three day workshop with Sarah Fortin
on Weaving in Three Dimensions. She showed many examples of
her work and taught how to set up a loom without a second
beam and weave double weave puckers, ruffles and pockets. We
should get some very interesting show and tell from this
workshop.
Next meeting will be the last of the fall. We will have
“Lost in Translation…or Why Color Theories Do Not Guarantee
Good Cloth” with Ruby Leslie. Strategies for how to
successfully incorporate color into woven structures will be
addressed with hands-on exercises using commercially
available yarns and applying the principles of optical
blending. When Handwoven Magazine invited Ruby to become a
contributing member of their newly created “Color Forecast”
series design team, creating swatches on a regular basis
mandated a rethinking of her design process. This fueled her
desire to share her insights about how to successfully
integrate color, structure, and yarn in weaving without
having to rely on recipes.
We have some great programs lined up for 2009 including
Felting with Jennifer Hoag and March, Habu Textiles in
September (what to do with all those luscious and exotic
yarns you see at NEWS and Convergence), a three day workshop
with Robin Spady next October, and Charlotte Hamlen on
Japanese tapestries and kasuri (ikat.)
The February meeting will include a potluck and sale. You
can donate to the guild or sell items for yourself with a
donation to the guild. There will also be show and tell,
demos in the afternoon, and a report on the trip to
Guatemala. Let Toby or BJ know if you would like to present
something.
Betty Atwood volunteered to do an informal workshop in the
spring, possibly March, and
Edith House an informal workshop on rag prep, possibly in
February. Another workshop requested was back strap loom
weaving.
April will be time to turn in your work for the guild show
and May will be the show opening. There are lots of little
jobs that need to be done, many of which can be done by
email. Volunteers are needed.
Volunteers are also needed to work on the static fashion
show at next summer’s New England Weavers Seminar. The
Connecticut guild has props that we can use which we will
have to get from them. We will need to set up Friday night
so the show will be up Saturday and Sunday and take it down
Sunday.
The venue at Smith College will be more compact since there
won’t be a second conference competing for space at the same
time.
