October 07 Meeting Notesby Mary Schwartz
The October workshop was a 3 day color
extravaganza with Betty Vera on designing with multi-colored
warps. It came highly recommended and I think everyone who
took it would concur. If you didn’t get a chance at the
Guild or at NEWS, do take this workshop at your next
opportunity. It will really open your eyes to color.
The next workshop on November 10, 2007 will be Sharon Baker
Kelly’s “Sewing with Hand Woven Fabric.” Two weavers have
said they have extra fabric so if anyone is still thinking
of taking this but hasn’t any suitable fabric, there should
be extra available. We should be able to share sewing
machines too. Contact Heidi Beckwith to register.
FUTURE PROGRAM PREVIEW: February – Show and Tell, potluck
and computer software for show and tell. March – not
confirmed but possibly Fran Curran - Creating a personal
statement with a weave structure April – two days with
Laurie Autio on lace weaves. May – Mary Ann Sanborn on
tablet weaving.
GUILD EXCHANGE: Eight weavers (so far) have expressed
interest in doing an exchange like the napkin exchanges that
3 groups did this last year. The only parameter so far is
that we would like to use bamboo yarn. If there are more
people interested we will all maintain the same themes but
divide into smaller groups so no one has to do too many. Not
that many of us have bamboo in our stashes but one of our
members has an account at Silk City so we could do a group
purchase.
NEWS (New England Weavers Seminar) The Vermont Weavers Guild
will do put up and take down of the static fashion show. The
next NEWS will probably be at Smith again but may be a
different weekend.
LIBRARY: If you haven’t seen it lately, it looks great! The
library committee has really done a wonderful job organizing
it. They are also working on some procedures to make the
library accessible and easy to use but also to keep the
books secure. There is still some yarn left from the silent
auction in September. This will be available at the November
meeting for a donation. This sale benefits the library.
NEW BUSINESS: A suggestion was made to raise money for the
scholarship fund by members making and donating items to
sell. Selling outside the guild would raise money and
generate publicity. There was some interest in this and some
discussion of how this could be done.
KIMBALL HOUSE: The White River Craft Center would like to
formalize a rental agreement with the Guild. There was a lot
of discussion about this but general agreement that this was
reasonable and that Kimball House is a good place to have
meetings. Along with the discussion about a rise in rent was
a discussion about increasing the dues and workshop fees,
which have not changed in about ten years. The Guild’s
fiscal year runs from September to September. The executive
committee will discuss the budget before the May meeting and
put the information on the new website. Dues and fees will
be discussed at the annual meeting in May of 2008. |
