November 07 Meeting Notesby Mary Schwartz
The November workshop was by Sharon Baker Kelly about
sewing with hand woven fabric. We got some good information
about how to stabilize, piece and sew fabrics into a pillow
top. It was easy to see how that technique could be
translated into garments or other projects and it took the
intimidation factor out of cutting up hand wovens. It was
more of a project than we could do in one day but the
directions were good and the sewing not too difficult. I
completed mine and was pleasantly surprised at how a bunch
of “challenging” green fabric from Betty Vera’s color
workshop turned into something nicely summer-y looking.
Speaking of Betty Vera, a copy of her workshop sample
notebook has been added to the guild library.
NEW WEBSITE:
Many thanks go to Kim Cannon and Lida Douglas for the new
website. This should really help the weavers in Vermont get
connected and stay connected to the Guild.
The address is www.vermontweaversguild.org. Google may have
a little trouble finding us, but if you type in the address
above you will get there.
If anyone has more pictures of what we/you are doing through
winter, send them to Lida or Kim to put on the website.
There are also links to fiber related sites, including
commercial sponsors of our prizes, other guilds, suppliers,
and the looms for sale list.
PROGRAMS:
Our next meeting in February will be Show and Tell, potluck,
plus mini workshops on varied subjects, including, but not
limited to, yarn twist and how it affects fabric, computer
software, toe-up knitted socks. If you want some information
on any topic or have a topic you’d like to present, please
let Toby Goldsmith know. This will be fairly informal so
don’t be shy about asking or offering.
In March we will have Fran Curran on designing a personal
statement with a weave structure.
April will be a two day workshop with Laurie Autio on Lace
weaving
May will be tablet weaving with Mary Ann Sanborn
There is more information under Programs on the website.
More info is on the fabulous new website. Click on Calendar
and then Workshops.
If you see workshops on the website that you are interested
in, you can sign up anytime by specifying which workshops
you want and sending that information with the fees to Heidi
Beckwith.
TOWEL EXCHANGE:
Nine weavers so far are signed up for the bamboo towel
exchange. Colors have been selected from Silk City’s color
cards. They are walnut, pine, china red, sapphire and
toffee.
If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, contact
Dianne Yelton. It’s not too late.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Jane Bird said she would contact the Chandler about our next
show.
Postcards were sent to former members reminding them of dues
and membership and we now have a list of interested people
who were not hearing from us.
The Guild voted at the meeting to have the treasurer
automatically pay for the Vermont Craft Council membership
when it comes up for renewal.
