Meeting Notes - February 09by Mary Schwartz
The February meeting was devoted to Show-and-Tell and
mini-workshops. There was an outstanding potluck lunch and
we had some hands on instruction on spindle spinning and rag
preparation for rag weaving.
PROGRAMS: Coming right up at the next meeting will be
felting with Jennifer Hoag. This will be a wet workshop
including wet felting (“painting with wool”) and nuno
felting (wisps of protein fibers are felted into a sheer
silk fabric base). Jennifer will make a kit for $10 or you
can bring your own materials if you like—small amounts of
merino or other wool that will felt and a piece of silk
gauze 15” x 15”.
Also bring a couple of towels and (optional) apron and
rubber gloves.
More details are available on the website.
April is the time to turn in your items for the guild show.
Sara Goodman will give a presentation on her travels to
Bali/Guatemala in the afternoon.
The Guild Show opening and annual meeting are in May. There
will be a workshop on inkle loom weaving with Betty Atwood
in the morning and show opening in the afternoon. Andy Bird
may still have more inkle looms to rent or buy. Let him know
if you need one. Bring firm cotton, 3/2, 5/2, or 10/2--no
wool or nubby yarn.
More information can be found under the calendar heading.
Select meetings and look under May 16.
The annual meeting will include the election of vice
president, nominating committee member and program chair.
Coming up next fall are Habu Textiles (using unique and
difficult to find materials such as hand reeled silk and
stainless steel) in September, a three-day workshop called
“Extreme Warp Makeover” with Robin Spady in October, and
Charlotte Hamlen on Japanese weaving and kasuri (Japanese
ikat) in November.
GUILD SHOW: The show “Windows on Weaving” will open May 16.
