February 08 Meeting Notesby Mary Schwartz
February can be a challenge weather-wise so the day was
devoted to show-and-tell by the members, various informal
presentations, and a potluck.
There are four workshops upcoming this spring and fall—all
have openings.
PROGRAMS: Fran Curran’s program “Creating a Personal
Statement with a Weave Structure” will be presented in
March. I heard several testimonials at the February meeting
about this workshop. April will be a two day workshop with
Laurie Autio on Lace weaves. It will be a hands-on round
robin.
In May we will have a hands-on workshop on card weaving by
Mary Ann Sanborn.
In October there will be a three day workshop on 3-D weaving
with Sara Fortin.
More details can be found on the website at:
http://vermontweaversguild.org/calendar/workshops.html
Reminder: If you see workshops on the website that you are
interested in you can sign up anytime by sending the name of
the workshop/s you want with a check to Heidi Beckwith.
NEWS (New England Weavers Seminar will be at Smith College
next summer. Some of the logistical problems with Smith are
being addressed. The Vermont guild will do the static
fashion show.
GUILD SHOW: The guild show needs a chair. The show will be
in May of 2009. It’s not necessary to live in the
Randolph area to work on the show. Except for putting up and
taking down the show with other volunteers, most of what
needs to be done can be done by phone and email. Two or
more, a chair and assistant/s would be ideal.
Some ideas for a show theme were suggested including using
the Kimble House as theme since there are so many colors and
patterns that can be found in the building itself. A piece
of weaving together with a photo of the thing that inspired
it could be shown. Another member suggested facetiously that
all the pieces have to be unfinished. (But Kimball House is
getting more finished by the day. It now has a furnace and
the downstairs is for the most part painted and finished and
is pretty comfortable.)
A couple of suggested titles for the show were “Weaving
Notes from the Kimball House” and “Weaving from our Home”
(with perhaps a subtitle). Other ideas are welcome.
NEWSLETTER: There’s no newsletter this spring but will be
one in the fall. There was a discussion about the
newsletter, whether to continue it, since we have an email
list and a website, and what it should contain. Not all
Guild members have email. BJ Allen said she would like to
see articles, book reviews, questions and answers and the
like in the newsletter.
OTHER BUSINESS: There was a list of items to take up at the
executive committee meeting in March, including the budget,
how to raise money and whether and how much to raise dues to
cover the rise in rent and general expenses of the guild.
Dues cover the morning speakers. The afternoon and multi-day
workshops cover their own cost.
One idea was for a two level system of dues. One level would
be basic dues. The other could be a “Friend of the Guild”
where members who want to and can afford it could give more.
$25 to $30 was suggested for basic dues. Dues haven’t been
raised in about 10 years. It was suggested that a budget is
needed in order to know what amount is reasonable for dues.
There are now several committees handling various
assignments in the guild. Committee meetings will be held
before the regular Saturday meeting from 9-10 am. A great
way to get to know other weavers is to join a committee.
