Meeting Notes - May 08by Mary Schwartz
The morning presentation at the May meeting was by
MaryAnn Sanborn on tablet weaving. It was a lively and fun
introduction to a very portable form of weaving.
PROGRAMS: Now is the time to see what’s coming up for the
fall and think about signing up.
In September we have Beth Guertin presenting GARBAGE WARPS AKA
Cleaning Out Your Yarn Closet. I’m sure most of us can
relate to this. This will cover planning a project using
leftover yarns from previous projects (and not buying
anything else to weave the project)
In October we have Sarah Fortin’s 3 day workshop – Weaving
in 3 Dimensions. Anyone who’s seen Sarah’s fabulous work at
NEWS and wanted to know how it’s done, or wants to escape
into the 3rd dimension —this is the workshop for you.
November will see Ruby Leslie presenting Lost in Translation
or Why Color Theories Do Not Guarantee Good Cloth. All of us
get seduced in the yarn store. Then what?
Ruby designs for Handwoven magazine’s “Color Forecast”
series.
Details of the workshops are on the website -
vermontweaversguild.org/workshops
The Guild library holdings are now on the web. The list is
available by title, author and subject in the members-only
section.
GUILD SHOW: There was a discussion of possible themes for
the show including the following:
Birds of Vermont
A Poem (I think this meant using a poem as inspiration.)
Kimball House: Weaving From Our Home
Windows on Weaving
Looms with a View
Green
A majority of hands went up for Windows on Weaving and Looms
with a View. But in at least one carpool on the way back
from the meeting the idea of “Green” as a theme, or as a
side show, became more appealing, especially since it was so
very green that day.
MISCELLANEOUS:
The Guild will have a presence at the Vermont Sheep and Wool
festival this year, September 6 – 7, 2008.
We will be there to demo weaving and provide an opportunity
for the public to try it out.
Here’s something to think about and discuss at the September
meeting – having a meeting or meetings in the summer, rather
than, or in addition to, winter.
The budget was discussed at the May meeting and dues, which
haven’t been raised in more than 10 years, were raised to
$30/year payable in September of each year. As we all know,
everything is going up and our expenses are no exception.
These expenses include rent, programs plus travel for the
presenters, the guild show, the library, and some
miscellaneous expenses. The Guild has a small surplus now so
it was agreed to use some of that surplus to offset dues to
keep them as low as possible.
There was a motion that the Guild set up a finance committee
to have a long term plan for financial survival of the
guild.
