Meeting Notes - October 09

by Mary Schwartz

October’s meeting was in the midst of a 3 day workshop by Robyn Spady, “Extreme Warp Makeover”. The Vermont guild was remarkable for the ability of quite a few participants to make all the samples during the workshop.
There should be some good show and tell from this one. Robyn was extremely generous with her knowledge and really opened up the possibilities for 4 shaft (and beyond) weaving.

Julie George will give a presentation on the Vermont Historical Society Project and Spot Weaves for the November meeting. Julie, with Kate Smith, Katherine Clark, and Trudy Otis, spent one morning a week throughout the summer and fall 2004 at the Vermont Historical Society documenting the textile collection. Julie will take you on a tour of the textiles through photographs, followed by a chance to look through the fabric analysis notebook and see woven linen samples of many of the analyzed fabrics and overshot samples woven from handwritten antique drafts.

Tamie Pitman will also give a presentation on her work in Guatemala.

And there will be a sale of work by Mayan Hands, an opportunity to pick up a few presents just in case you haven’t woven enough stuff yourself for everyone.

Churro yarn in skeins and on cones will be available for sale.

The afternoon will be devoted to UFOs.
Are there UFOs in your closet, under your bed or in boxes around your house? No time to do to the finish work on the fabrics you’ve woven? Are you trying to decide whether to come to a guild meeting or stay home and finish some of the gifts you want to give this holiday season? Here’s a chance to do both. Bring your UFOs (UnFinished Objects) and work on them while chatting with friends and getting inspiration from other weavers. Have a question about how to finish your project or need someone to talk you through cutting your woven fabric for the first time? Or no space to lay that blanket out and cut the fringe evenly? Bring those dishtowels, blankets, scarves or whatever you need to work on and spend the afternoon finishing up some of those UFOs.
